I can't remember not wanting to--I was always put in swimming meets and dancing school competitions and talent competitions. And I wasn't forced, I didn't have the mama-Rose-type of mother, and I was never forced. I genuinely wanted to do it. I have always been competitive. I'm terrible; I'm a nightmare at Scrabble or Trivial Pursuit. I mean, I have to win. Or Yahtzee. It's like it's just not fair, if I don't win, I'm a nightmare. But I have that--I want to get it right, and I want to be good, and I want to be in it, and I want to win it. It's been something like from swimming to judo to dancing to singing, I was always like that as a kid. And my mother and father--when I left school, I left school at fifteen and they were really dubious, obviously. A fifteen-year-old woman going to London to pursue a career in acting. God knows. In Wales it's like, "There's the casting couch! Oh my God! She's, like, to drugs!" But I had a lot of rules to abide by, but I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I couldn't imagine looking back at my life and saying, "If I only had the balls and the guts to get up there and do it, maybe this would be different, maybe my life would be different." |
